Interpreting Data: Data Management

As a group take a look at the following four pictures. On chart paper record what each one is eg. Pictograph. Then tell me what it is telling you. Eg the months of the year students in our class were born. The most were born in July.






If done early write down your answers to the following two questions: 

1. What are some ways large corporations collect data?
2. Why might we want to collect data and what is it used for?

Now you have your plan you will be writing a rough recount to bring into school for Monday to be edited. Here is what we are looking for in our good copy recount and how I will be marking your good copy.

Translation, Reflection, Rotation

Translation: is a slide it moves a figure along a straight line. The figure and it’s image are congruent.


Reflection: Is a flip around a centre point. The figure and its image face opposite ways.


Rotation: Is a turn around a centre point. The figure and its image may face different ways.

News Recount

Your Job: To research a news story on Teaching Kids News

Using the News Planner
Write down the when, who where, what, why of the article on one side of the planner. 

Once Written Down
Use the other side of the planner to make you recount of the news story. Full sentences.

Include
- Topic sentence, including who, what, where,why, when

- Two main events

- Conclusion or ending that wraps everything up. 

- A picture for each stage of the news story.

A recount is a re- telling of events


It is often entertaining,
Goes in chronological order
Past tense “ed”
Linking words


Anything to add?

Today you will be looking at the following recount and....

Underline:  Who, what, when, where, and why

Number: The events

Circle: Past tense words.

Colour: Linking words.

Draw: A squiggly line under the title, topic and concluding sentence.

Recounts: What Makes Them?

On your desks you will find piles with four short recounts. Please read with a desk partner and come up with a list for what is the same about each one.

Look at:

Are they all written in past or present tense?

Are there linking words? Make a list of them.

Do they answer Who, What, Where, Why and How?

What would you say are the parts of a re-count?

After Reading can you define what a re-count is?

Coordinate Systems

Find the Coordinates for the Water Slide and the Swing.

A Wrinkle in Time

Over the next six weeks we will be looking at A Wrinkle in Time. To start you will find a quote on your desk. Please write your thoughts on it then we will discuss what will be happening with our study.

We will then talk about all we will be doing with this book.


We will be looking at this book as a combined read aloud and self guided reading. Part I will read in class and part you may either listen to at home, Links on google classroom, or read with the provided digital copy.

A Wrinkle in Time

Starting next week we will be looking at the novel: A Wrinkle in time. A theme of this book is Attitude. Lets have a look at the following video. 


After watching please answer:

1. Do you agree with this coach?
2. What is his message to kids?
3. How does this apply to school, the classroom, outside of sports.
