Editing Our Short Stories

When you are done writing your short story you will have to get it edited by a peer in the class and a family member. The good copy after editing will be due January 8th typed and printed when you return to school.

Centimeter Grid Masterpieces: Area, Length, Perimeter Cumulative Assignment

Your final measurement task will be to create a centimeter grid masterpiece. You will need to show me the length on the side. Find the perimeter and the area.

An A level work will have:

A complex drawing

A scale

A clearly divided creation

A formula for every measurement of area and perimeter and all the solving steps for each formula

Use estimation and exact measurements where needed (clearly marked estimation measurements)

Three area's and perimeters are converted to other units of measure

Writing our Own Very Short Story

Using all the skills we have been practicing your job is to make your paragraphs that you have written into a short story that has a clear beginning middle and end.  

The rough copy will need to be written for Wednesday so we can start to edit and write our good copies.

Success Criteria:

3-5 Paragraphs. 

Clear beginning, middle, and end

Uses Elements of writing: Personification, Colorful Writing, Descriptive Language, Onomatopoeia, Metaphors and Similes Etc. 

Clear spelling and Grammar

Short Stories: Writing Our Middles

Middle of the StoryIn the middle of the story two major things need to happen. First:The Rising Action: The rising action of a story is the series of events that begin immediately after the introduction of the story and builds up to the climax. These are events in the story that build tension and suspense. 

Examples:  The Hobbit (By J. R. R. Tolkien)The conflict begins in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, as Gandalf meets Bilbo and asks him to play the role of a burglar in the dwarves’ expedition to recover the treasure of Thorin from Smaug. Rising action occurs as he agrees to act as a burglar during this adventure. Snow White, the rising action occurs when the Queen’s magic mirror warns her that she is no longer the fairest lady in the land; that, instead, it is now Snow White.

Climax: The crisis or biggest issue in a story. The point where the biggest problem must be faced. 

Examples: Possible Spoilers a Head

Peeta and Katniss agree to eat the poisonous berries instead of attempt to kill each other. - The Hunger Games

Wilbur is declared the winner at the county fair, and his life is saved -Charlotte's Web

In "The Three Little Pigs," suspense builds up until the confrontation between the third pig and the wolf. This confrontation is the climax.

Writing a Good Beginning!

Today we are looking at how to write a good beginning to a story. Look at the three introductions below. Which one would make you want to read more of my story. Be able to tell me why!

• “Last summer I went to the beach. We had a lot of fun.”
• “I woke up and looked out the window. It was a beautiful day. When I went downstairs, I said to my kids, ‘Let’s go to the beach today!’”
• “It was only 6:45 am and already the temperature was over 80 degrees. I couldn’t take another day of swimming in my own sweat! There was only one solution. I hollered up the stairs: ‘Hey guys, who wants to go to the beach today?!’”

Narrative 7: Point of view

Point of view: Telling a story from one side, one character, or one things point of view.  With point of view writing you can tell the story from an items perspective, a persons or any thing that is around such as a cloud. It is important to know that each point of view will be different and have different information to tell as all characters or things are aware of and know different things. 

With the following picture tell the point of view form three things in the picture. Remember a story needs a beginning middle and end. Keep your stories short no more then two paragraphs as you will have to re tell it three times. 

Grammar:

Progressive Verb, a verb that links works together to show that something is happening. 

Eg. Joe is running three miles.

Narrative Lesson #6 Voice

Voice:  The unique way that you write or your character speaks that is different from any other writer or character you may hear from. It is not copied or taken from somewhere else. You are using your own words to tell something completely new.

Measurement: Measuring Perimeter

Today we are going to be looking at measuring perimeter.

Important Definitions:

Polygon: Any 2D shape formed with straight lines.

Scale: Representing a larger shape with a smaller size in order to fit on paper.

When done copying:

• Take a piece of paper and cut it into four triangles.
• Use these to make a polygon. (with three, four, five sides)

Narrative Lesson #5: Exaggeration

Today we are going to be looking at a special type of Exaggeration Called Hyperbole.

A Hyperbole: is an extreme exaggeration. 

Example: It was so cold I saw polar bears wearing jackets.  I have told you a million times! He is as skinny as a tooth pick!

Grammar: 

Today in grammar we are looking at perfect verb tenses. A perfect verb describes an action that happened or will happen at an indefinite time. This tense is formed by using the words have or has, had or will have with a verb. 

Examples:

Present Perfect Tense: We have lived here for years. 
Past Perfect Tense: We had lived there for years. Future 
Perfect Tense: In June, we will have lived here for 10 years.

Introduction to Measurment

We are going to be starting out Measurement Unit this week!

On your desk you will find a definition page. Please copy in the following on to your definition page and write and example.

Perimeter: A continuous line forming a boundary or edge.

Area: The surface of a piece of land or object.

Width: The measurement of something from side to side.

Length: The measurement of something from end to end.

Themes in Literature

Themes in Literature

What is the central idea or underlying messages of a book or piece of text?

Themes are rarely stated in the book, instead the reader must consider the plot, characters, setting to infer themes


For example, think about the Topic and Theme of the classic story Cinderella.
If you are describing the TOPIC, you might say it is a story about a poor girl who marries a
prince.

But if you are describing the THEME, it could be described as an example of karma or good
things happening to good people.
